My Students
Due to language delays, my amazing preschool students are learning to communicate with Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). The population I work with as a Speech Language Pathologist in the public San Francisco school system have diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability, and benefit greatly from resources that expand their ability to use language. It's incredible to watch my students communicate their wants/needs/feelings for the first time by pointing to icons on printed, core language boards or exchanging printed icons. Additionally, research shows that AAC supports a student's ability to increase their verbal language! My students are highly motivated by toys (what 3-4 year olds aren't?!) and benefit greatly from a variety of exciting materials.
My Project
Imagine not being able to communicate your most basic wants and needs - how frustrating would that be?! Thank you for providing FUN materials (Pete the Cat for the win!) that motivate my students to request/comment/direct the actions of others. The toys will be used in circle time, small group activities, and one-on-one therapy sessions.
Just as important, my students require picture icons and core boards to interact with their community and environment - this uses a ton of ink, laminating paper, and velcro.
These materials will allow preschool students in San Francisco Unified School District to expand their language abilities, which will greatly impact their success in school and beyond. THANK YOU!
