PreK Play Power: Help Us Learn...The Fun Way!

My Students

I started as a Teach For America Corps member because I wanted to empower students as agents of change. Four years later I’m humbled to learn alongside my four year old friends but my aim goes beyond empowerment; I believe my power as a leader in our movement for educational equity lies in honoring the power of our students.

Big change starts small: my little-but-mighty pre-kindergarten scholars are the revolutionary leaders our world so desperately needs.

My kiddos have more heart and grit than you could imagine, and they are excited about growing their brains so they can make the world a better place.

My Project

I'm invested in bringing the best early childhood educational practices to the most disadvantage settings because all students deserve the strongest of foundational building blocks for their educational journeys and lives. After researching the brain development of young children and educational theories, and after seeing how transformational play-based learning is for kids during an internship between my first and second year, I became determined to bring my kids the same opportunities.

This year I'm excited to be implementing a play based learning curriculum called Tools of the Mind; I see daily that play-based learning isn't just powerful, but transformational for my little leaders.

Rooted in neuroscience and educational theory TOM uses theme-based learning and self-regulatory practices like play-planning to help students develop the mental tools and construct knowledge through play. Months into the curriculum I'm feel like pinching myself daily because what I'm seeing in the classroom feels so incredible!

However, we desperately need your help. In our next units our classroom centers will be themed as Doctor's office and Veterinarians. Executing this curriculum requires that materials for play props and role props be made or purchased. We make everything that we can and I donate every last bit of my paycheck back into the classroom, I don't have enough money personally or resources to get everything my kids deserve. You would be ensuring my students have various doctors kits and veterinarian kits for their centers over the next two units, literacy choice time tools, markers for our scaffolded writing program, phonemic awareness centers, math manipulatives for stations and centers, and more. Every cent you donate makes a huge impact on our classroom. Please consider how you can help my kids!
