My Students

My students are mixed ages 3-5 and can potentially be in my classroom for two years gaining all of the skills that they need to enter kindergarten in a low- income neighborhood in Philadelphia. They have a very hard job entering our school at the age of 3; they leave their guardian's side and enter a school schedule where they are asked to sit in a circle, share, and listen to a teacher, on top of learning math and literacy skills in 2 languages!

My school's Headstart Program is unique because we are bilingual.

Many of my children and their families speak Spanish. We work hard to embrace their culture and maintain their Spanish language while still teaching the English language they need to succeed. We aspire to build up the Latina community in Philadelphia, starting with the children.

My Project

Many of my 3-5-year-olds have no idea how to use a computer mouse, but give them a touchscreen and their small fingers fly! I am asking for an iPad and headphones so that my kids can connect with learning in 2018. We will be able to watch videos relating to our themes, keep active with follow-along exercise/ dance videos, and keep up with educational games such as Starfall for letter recognition and early problem-solving skills.

I would love to introduce my students to the benefits of technology and give them each a daily turn to work on an iPad!

This will also be a great way to introduce students to educational games and websites so that when they go home and reach for their parents’ phones, they have more beneficial requests to do with their ‘screen time’.
