My Students
I strive to create a classroom that facilitates independence for my full of adventurous, enthusiastic, fun-loving, inquisitive, eager learners. These students come to school everyday to create, explore, and investigate through hands on learning. I teach in a rural, Title 1 school. Many of the children come to me from migrant households and are yearning for a safe, loving, and comfortable place to learn and grow. My classroom is a second home to my students. They work cooperatively, support and care about each other. We truly become a family during our time together throughout the school year.
My Project
I have spent my summer researching and developing routines for my a new class in the hopes of rolling out flexible seating choices in my second grade classroom. Having taught for 20+ years, I have seen classroom layouts affect student learning. Instead of the traditional desks and chairs that have been in classrooms for decades, I want to try something different. Students can benefit from flexible seating because it is conducive to collaboration, creativity, and engaged learning. Students have the choice to select where they will sit in order to do their best work. Children are movers and shakers. They absolutely can be still for short periods of time but sitting on a hard, plastic chair for almost 7 hours is not conducive to much!
Having a choice in where they complete their work increases student motivation and physical activity is not only linked to better health, but also increased academic performance as well as improved behavior.
These flexible seating options like wobble chairs and stability balls allow students to burn calories, improve metabolism, and use up some of their extra energy. Different types of seating options, like the Kore wobble stool can improve core strength and posture while children wiggle around on their seat. The balance board provides either a comfortable seat for a lowered table or something for students to stand and balance on while doing their best thinking at a raised table. Please help our class engage learning in a more comfortable, and flexible way!
