My Students
"To be number one, you have to train like you're number two".-Maurice Greene
My girls have one thing on their mind this year-state champs! They have seen success in our boys track and field program and have been working hard this year to become state champs themselves.
I am a track and field coach at a public school on the South Side of Chicago.
Resources in CPS are very limited and even more limited in neighborhoods with a lower socioeconomic background. Due to the lack of funds, our girls are limited on necessary accessories and equipment needed to succeed. Our young girls are motivated to attend school and excel in their studies due to the athletic programs the school offers. They choose to participate in sports, such as track and field, to build friendships. They have great talent on the field that they are eager to share with their friends, family, and school neighborhood.
These young ladies have so much pride within themselves and their school, that they want to achieve something that has not been done before, become state champs. Last year was a learning year for the athletes as well as myself. A lot of my own money was used to feed the girls and dress them. I would like your help this year to provide basic needs of my young athletes.
My Project
Right now, my school shares batons with the boys team. My girls would benefit from having their own set of batons so they can practice their exchanges in multiple groups. More repetition means greater outcomes.
When we started going outside to practice, my girls were cold last year. They did not have enough layers to keep them warm from changing of the seasons. Long sleeve shirts and long socks will keep them warm. Also, because they are the same color, they will look more united as one team. Sports bras are necessary for these ladies. Many do not have sports bras thus they cannot provide 100% effort each day. Effort will lead to better times. Better times will lead to greatness and state champions. This year we have raised money to provide these young ladies with uniforms and travel gear but they are missing the basic necessities that I am asking for help with.
It may not seem like much, but having the basics is necessary for this program to succeed.
We have the potential this year to make it to state. Clothes and equipment will only encourage my girls to continue their hard work to accomplish something this school is not used to, girls state champions.
Each year these girls watch their fellow male athletes make it to state and earn money for their programs. Money that provides them with food, equipment, and clothes. This year is their turn!
