I'm an Occupational Therapist working with students who have Autism. The majority of the students that I work with are in a separate setting classroom with a low student/teacher ratio due to the varying severity of their needs. The students require individualized instruction utilizing an adaptive curriculum.
Our students learn best through interactive experiences that are structured based on their abilities and individual academic goals.
Our students do not have a lot of opportunities at home for exposure to a variety of play tasks, therefore school experiences are crucial in promoting continued fine motor, visual motor and self care growth.
My Project
The project is designed to offer new play experiences utilizing a therapeutic approach to a classroom of pre-school students with autism. The activities will offer opportunities to increase their fine motor and visual motor skills through successful play.
Students will do common things in an uncommon way to promote the development of improved bilateral hand coordination skills.
The classroom is currently comprised of students with varying degrees of autism which impacts their functional work skills. The work task boxes will assist with improving fine motor skills for greater success with classroom work/play tasks in preparation for higher level lifelong learning.
