Pre-K Writers

My students need composition books, letter, word and number stamps with ink, whiteboards and markers to help improve their writing skills.

My Students

The Common Core Standards have raised the bar for students and teachers. Making sure my students are ready for Kindergarten is a top priority. Getting them writing would be a great achievement.

Our school is in the heart of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.

The school includes students from Pre-k to eighth grade, and it is a melting pot of descendants from the West Indies. We are in a high poverty area, and about 95% of the students in the school receives free lunch. There are 18 energetic, three and four year old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts.

My Project

I need materials like letter & number stamps with ink pads, whiteboards with markers, composition books and toner cartridges to get my students writing. The stamp sets will be used by my students as they learn how to form their letters. They will them get to write more independently with the composition books and whiteboards during writers workshop. Then they will use the toner with our classroom printer to publish writing they work on on our classroom computer.

For the youngest students, whose skills vary greatly, the goal is to elicit a story from a drawing, recording the student’s words in dictation form on the drawing and encouraging the student to move from drawing to writing by guiding the student in the use of phonics to sound out words.
