Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Never under-estimate the brain of a 4 year-old. Yes, crayons and paint are crucial for early childhood development, but computers are equally important. My Pre-K students are here to prove it. They see computers everywhere but how many of them actually have access to one at home? Not many.
My students attend a school that receives Title 1 funding and free breakfast and lunch.
Gangs, drugs, and violence are always within close proximity. Regardless of these challenges, my students show up every day eager to be in class interacting with their friends, and display a great deal of energy and enthusiasm for learning. I want every second of their day to be filled with rich experiences. Many have two working parents or a single parent who cannot consistently dedicate the quality learning time that is required for their educational success.
My Project
This light-weight device would make it easy for me to transport to each student, minimizing unnecessary classroom traffic. Students could work in pairs, as they learn to manipulate its expansive functions, making them ready for future grade level computer requirements and rigorous online assessments.
Crucial academic skills would also be supplemented via the computer as students would learn to log-on to educational websites that would supplement/reinforce key concepts taught in class. Students would also be able to print relevant material and take home for further review with their parents or caretakers.
What about virtual field trips? How amazing would it be to be able to see peers of their age around the world in their own classrooms. The possibilities are infinite and we hold high expectations for our little ones. That is why a laptop would point them in the direction of educational success.
My Pre-K class would benefit in so many ways from a Macbook.
This laptop could add self-esteem, confidence, and and over-all sense of pride to a child who would otherwise rely solely on paper, pencil, and an occasional book at home. My students would be even more motivated to want to come to school knowing that every experience at the computer has something new and valuable to offer. They too deserve to have access to the latest computers that this wonderful world has to offer.
