My students need a Store-It-All Teaching Center & an 8-Cubby Unit so our paraprofessional can present lessons in various settings & store materials to maximize space.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My paraprofessional is vital to our Pre-K program. She's creative, organized, dependable, diligent - a real trooper - figuratively & literally. With limited space & endless ideas, she's become my transient T. A.! A mobile center would ensure easy transport to her next teaching destination.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Our classroom is small, but jam-packed with activities, centers, and materials. In an effort to maximize learning opportunities, my paraprofessional and I take advantage of every inch, including outside. The great outdoors isn't just for the messy stuff anymore. Students really get a kick out of sharing a story or practicing numbers on the playground, because we can learn anywhere! Our challenge now is to minimize the hassle.
My Project
A Classic Birch Store-It-All Teaching Center combines instructional tools with storage that would streamline my paraprofessional's daily quest to find a place she can call her own. The magnetic white board is ideal for demonstrating writing and drawing techniques. Students will be able to utilize the board with markers and magnets. There is also a place on the back for felt or hook & loop props for storytelling, sequencing, and classifying. Rings front and back will allow her to hang instructional posters and pocket charts for instruction and practice. There is plenty of space to store supplies, materials, and big books. An 8-Cubby Unit would provide a 'home-base' inside the classroom where she can keep items that aren't currently in use, but will be. Because my paraprofessional is also in charge of Parent Volunteer record-keeping, she requires an area for parents to sign the monthly calendar, sign-in when they come help, pick up a badge, etc.
My paraprofessional comes in each day prepared for whatever might happen and rarely complains.
It would be a joy to reward her with a Store-It-All Teaching Center. No more lugging easels and chart racks in & out. Gone will be the days of searching for scissors or trying to remember where we left the Goldilocks felt board story this time. The focus will be on students & their instruction, not a daily scavenger hunt. My T. A. always rolls with the punches. She should roll with a cart, too!
