Pre-K Super Readers Want To Learn Super Sight Words!
My students need various reading and writing materials such as books, book storage, word card materials, sight word games, a white board, markers, etc. to make a fun and engaging Reading Center!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with 18 wonderful and inquisitive Pre-Kindergarten students in a very diverse school in Brooklyn, New York. We have children from many different cultures in our class and children with many special abilities. The children love to learn new things every day!
Many of our Pre-K students are ready to read and write!
Learning to read and write in Pre-K requires learning sight words and basic phonics skills. What better way for Pre-K children to begin reading and writing than through fun, hands-on activities in an engaging Reading Center?
My Project
In Pre-K we expose children to many forms of developmentally appropriate reading and writing such as having a classroom library, engaging in shared reading and messages of the day, reading books daily, etc. The first step to reading fluently is learning the sight words. Through our various activities, many children have begun to show an interest in reading and some have even begun learning sight words!
It is my goal to create a Reading Center where children can go daily to learn sight words and reading through fun and engaging activities.
Some of these activities would include use of a white board for children to write and use magnetic letters on, fun sight word games, books that are engaging and specifically teach sight words, and materials to make word cards so children can see how things they use and are learning about are spelled. Having these materials would encourage children who are ready to begin reading and writing in developmentally appropriate ways!
