I teach an Inclusive Pre-K class with a focus on developing social skills through peer modeling and addressing individual needs as they prepare to be successful in Kindergarten forward. With the exception of the typically developing students assigned as peer models in our PreK classrooms, my school serves students with significant special needs birth through age 21.
All of my students are considered at risk and each year I have 4-6 students with diagnosed special needs including autism, blindness, communication delays, social/behavioral challenges, and motor difficulties.
My goal every year, regardless of ability, is to spark my student’s natural curiosity and develop a love of learning that will follow them for a lifetime.
My Project
One of my favorite things to do as a teacher is see a child’s eyes light up when they find something new and exciting that they want to learn more about! With this project I plan to bring STEM and 21st century learning into Interest Areas throughout my classroom. We will see waterways being built in Sand and Water, magnetic blocks used to build skyscrapers and dinosaurs with x-ray images in the Discovery Area, microscopes and insect collectors used outdoors, among many other items that will be incorporated into our daily classroom life. All of these experiences will bring opportunities to practice crucial skills such as concept development, cooperation among peers, and intentional problem solving within the context of interest based learning in the areas of science, math, and engineering.
With that being said, my class was recently impacted by a fire that destroyed everything I have collected over the last 11 years of teaching, including materials from 5 previous Donor's Choose projects and other grants.
I strongly believe that a child’s love of learning, no matter what their ability level, should be supported and explored from an early age and I know these materials will help me do just that. Who knows, you may be supporting the development of future engineers, astronauts, and inventors!
