Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Before we embarked on our Winter Break, my young learners made a New Year's resolution. Once we return to school, it's time to learn the letters of the alphabet and all of their sounds. As with all resolutions, success will depend upon individual commitment and the proper tools.
I have 2 classes of 18, 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything.
They are enrolled in a School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP) whose participants are primarily English language learners qualifying for free lunch. The goal of this unique program is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language Spanish, as well as English language development.
They know how important it is to learn the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. Our classroom offers a variety of opportunities to practice these skills & parents are also doing their part to provide support and reinforcement at home.
My Project
Early literacy skills such as letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and rhyming are strong predictors of future reading success. Flashcards and worksheets are developmentally inappropriate and ineffective activities for 4-year-old's. They respond to innovation, variety, and most anything 'hands-on'.
The Alphabet Giant Stampers, Stamp & Erase Magic Alphabet Board, and Magnetic Alphabet Kit will allow students to produce letters and practice alphabet skills without concern for proper penmanship. They can spell their names, copy words, reproduce the alphabet, or simply stamp random letters they like. The Lacing String ABC's, Alphabet Soup Sorters, and alphabet puzzles provide opportunities to manipulate letters with some fun materials. The Alphabet Mats and Photographic Sorting Cards will be used in a variety of activities that foster letter knowledge as well as phonemic awareness.
These tools, games, and manipulative's will be valuable, motivational resources for my young learners as they work towards their New Year's resolution of learning the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.
While the majority of people fail to keep their resolutions, my students and I are determined to succeed. We WILL learn the alphabet!
