My students love to come to the STEAM room to build, create, explore, and dive into beloved topics such as dinosaurs, insects, and simple machines. The kids are curious, hands-on learners who love being challenged with new activities and materials. It is my goal as the STEAM cluster teacher to create learning opportunities for my students that meet their diverse needs.
Science at the early childhood level taps into the natural curiosity all children have from birth.
We explore living things, such as insects, dinosaurs, animals, and plants. The kids are always excited to share about what they observe in the natural world around them, for example sharing flowers or acorns they found on their walk to school. The Guidecraft Treasure Tubes would allow my students to share their natural treasures while also preserving them from damage. Children at this age also have a strong sense of empathy for living things, especially tiny creatures like ants and beetles. The Craft-tastic Nature Make-A-Bug-Hotel would allow children to develop a sense of stewardship for the insects they find outside on the playground. Cause and effect is a major theme in early childhood science; students often ask "why" it is that something happens. For example, why does a block building fall over, or why did a ball roll off of the table. The Kaplan Early Learning Ramp and Roll Discovery Blocks set is an excellent tool for students to discover what makes a marble roll, and how to make it move faster or slower. This block set would allow students hours of trial and error experimentation.
