My Students
It's a new school year and this is what we've established so far, "We use letters to make words and numbers to count things." In the mind of a four-year-old, that's a significant revelation! My job is to build on that foundation by expanding their perception of numbers & math concepts.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. The Pre-K math curriculum includes counting, numeral recognition, ordering objects by size, sorting by attributes, and working with geometric shapes. I strive to provide a developmentally appropriate, multi-modal learning environment for my students. Lessons that combine listening and speaking with hands-on activities are what my young learners crave and their brains require.
My Project
All my students, girls and boys alike, wait with anticipation for a turn in our Housekeeping Center. We already have a few of the Smart Snacks sets and they are favorites. The Stack & Count Layer Cake and Gingerbread Sort & Snap develop number sense, ordering, and sequencing skills with fun materials. Sorting, counting, and number recognition are practiced with The Goodie Games and 1 to 10 Counting Cans. Our upcoming Farm Unit will be enhanced with Count-a-Pig and Farmer's Market Color Sorting Set. Sorting requires students to combine visual discrimination with oral language to compare, categorize, describe, and rationalize and is an integral component of all curricular areas. My young learners will benefit from additional opportunities to gain proficiency with the Sorting Suitcase and Rainbow Sorting Crayons. Double-Sided Magnetic Numbers, Geometric Counting Cylinders, and Fun Fish Counters will ensure that students know the numbers and how to use them.
The goal of my Pre-K math program is to enable students to acquire math skills and concepts through exploration, discovery, and meaningful problem-solving.
The requested resources and materials will allow children to access the curriculum in developmentally appropriate activities. Sorting, categorizing, manipulating, and role-playing will ensure they understand that numbers are used for so much more than counting.
