My Students
To become independent readers, students need to have books at their reading level at school and at home.
Our school is in the heart of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.
The school includes students from Pre-k to eighth grade and is a melting pot of descendants from the West Indies. It is in a high poverty area and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch. There are 18 energetic, three and four year old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts.
My Project
I am requesting 2 collections of Guided Reading leveled fiction and non-fiction books to read at school and at home. These fiction and non-fictions reading sets will be used by my students in class and at home. The books in these sets are reading level A which is the perfect independent reading level for a majority of my students. The students will have access to these books during independent reading in class and then they will be able to take them home to read with their families.
I love reading to my students and they love listening to stories.
These books will make it possible for my students to read to themselves or to others. I hope that by providing this opportunity I will foster a life long love of reading in my students.
