My Students
This is the 1st year for our students in a structured educational system. They are all preschoolers who are delightfully curious about the world. All students are between the ages of 3 and 4, with some turning 5 years old this January. The school is a multi-cultural community, with most students coming from lower socio economic backgrounds. All students qualify for free breakfast and lunch every day. There are more then a handful of languages spoken in the student population and many of the preschoolers are learning to speak English for their first time, a process that is fully supported by school staff, teachers and peers.
Every preschooler enters their dance studio daily for a 50-minute period, it's the place where students have the opportunity to laugh, learn, play and explore how their bodies work in space and function in a social environment.
In addition to the 50-minute dance, music and PE period, students continue to strengthen their gross motor skills and play outside in the school's courtyard. Students function with various levels of physical ability. The equipment needed will help the students develop needed language skills and playing will help them learn new words as many are just learning English.
My Project
The materials in this project will be a major asset in each students social, physical and mental development during their time in pre-school. For example the class parachute will strengthen such skills as building teamwork, taking turns, following directions, cooperation and making comparisons. Equipment needed such as stability balls will help keep students active while building core muscles, which support the rest of the body. Students with special emotional and developmental needs will benefit from sensory stimulation as then can roll on their belly and back on the larger balls. The musical instruments will helps students learn, rhythms, patterns and tempo. There is a huge connection between play and language development in early childhood education. As students engage, play, dance and make music together they are strengthening both their verbal and physical abilities to communicate. The strong communication skills will play a major role in the success of the students for the rest of their life.
