All children are natural born Artists and Pre-K is where that talent is truly developed and embraced. I teach a dual language pre-k program in a high poverty school in New York City. The children in my class learn in both English and Spanish simultaneously. Our wonderful programs allows much creativity and fun filled activities.
Many of the children that enter my classroom come homes that do not provide children with childhood experiences and opportunities. Many of these children desperately need to exercise their motor skills especially their fine motor skills. Art activities allow children to use their fine motor skills and get them ready to start holding pencils and crayons appropriately. Unfortunately, budget cuts do not allow our pre-kindergartners to fully benefit from art projects and materials because of the lack of supplies.
In order to have an Art center that empowers the children to create, explore with , and make decisions with, our classroom needs sequence, paper shapes, glue, clay, and water color paper. Our class also needs a paper cutter so that I can cut up strips and pieces of paper to place into our collages. Carrying out these art projects really helps the students to make decisions, strengthen their motor skills, build vocabulary, and turn their creativity into something that tangible.
Your help will surely make a difference in the lives of these children because they will be able to be exposed to different kinds of materials. These children will be given ample opportunities to learn how to use various art materials so that they can manipulate materials to create physical creations.
