Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my classroom we will be learning about other countries in Pre-K this year. Pre-k students have a hard time thinking outside of their neighborhood. I want to expand my students' knowledge of the world.
My students are 4 year-olds in Pre-K.
We are a high poverty school in an urban district. Many of the families that attend our school are low-income and receive free/reduced lunch. Over half of the students in our school are English Language Learners. Many of my students have no English in their vocabulary, so they are also learning English along with regular Pre-K skills.
My Project
My students are so eager to learn, and do not have the opportunity to explore with their families. This year we will be learning about different countries and taking our own trips right from our classroom. Having a globe would be a great way to show the students where the different countries are located and how we could get to them (car, boat, plane). The multicultural family puzzles would help my students become aware that there are families just like theirs all over the world. The cards that say "hello" in other languages would be wonderful to teach us how to greet each other in the native languages. All of these items will help make this a fun theme for the students!
I believe this will create a foundation of knowledge for my students even at their young age.
These teaching tools will give them the chance to explore outside of their own neighborhood without actually leaving the school. Their views of the world will broaden and they will see there is life beyond the city they live in.
