My Project

My Pre-Kindergarten students love listening to me read books and they love cozy corners! They come to class enthusiastic about learning to read on their own. They have diverse backgrounds, and most come from economically disadvantaged households. When they entered our classroom some had never held a book. Despite their differences, one thing they all have in common is knowing that I love them beyond measure.

My Pre-K students deserve to have a classroom that feels comfortable and like a home.

Currently, our classroom library consists of just a bookshelf and some books. After, closely observing my students in other areas of our classroom, I noticed that areas that have seating and other furniture that is kid-sized get more use and are where they want to spend most of their time. This makes me sad because I want them to have books in their hands whenever possible.

Recently, I tested my theory. I asked my teammate to borrow her toddler-sized couch for a week. I placed the couch in a little corner in our classroom next to our bookshelf. When it was time for my students to select the center they go to each day that week, they began fighting over who was going to our library.

I want my students to have a cozy book nook of their own - a place with a little couch and some chairs, where they feel inspired to spend time with one of our books. Hopefully, inspiring them to love learning to read that book on their own.

My hope is that if my project is funded my dream for their cozy little corner will become realized, and in the process, inspire my young learners to become independent and inspired readers.
