My Students

My students are a combination of those who have special needs as well as peer models. Most are low-income. Being developmentally low with needs in cognitive, attention, fine motor, and communication skills, the items I select would support and enrich their learning along with our curriculum. They learn by "doing" even more so than their average-age peer. Children learn through play, engaging in hands-on activities. Worksheets often are not engaging enough to keep their attention and stagger the children's progress. I spend hours tailoring curriculum and activities to each child's specific needs. By your support, you will be strengthening their reasoning, thinking, communication, and fine motor skills so they will be able to succeed in building the skills needed to do well. I have seen how enriching their hands-on play experiences has made such a difference in their learning progression.

My Project

A block area would allow our students to learn to work collaboratively. This is good for their problem solving skills both for the actual building aspect but also for working together with their peers. They will learn things like taking turns and increasing their attention span.

They learn many different skills with a block area including math concepts, engineering, team work, and problem solving.

They can work on both gross and fine motor skills with the area as we add more materials throughout the year. They will learn concepts such as balancing, shapes, and engineering.
