This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When I was in school, success was achieved with pencils, paper, & books. Parents were available for homework and character-building chats. Technology was a record player & a reel-to-reel film projector. Academic success now falls primarily on a motivational teacher & students' access to computers.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, my students receive instruction in all academic areas: language arts, math, science, & social studies. They also enjoy art, music, & P.E. activities. What they don't have is access to technology, specifically a functional computer in our classroom.
The Pre-Kindergarten curriculum includes Technology Standards that address basic computer skills. The problem is we have an ancient model that operates at a snail's pace and regularly freezes. This is quite frustrating for the novice user and even more so for me, the teacher, because I am required to leave my small group lessons to provide 'tech support' dozens of times each day. Because our school computer lab in on the second story, my classes aren't allowed access.
My Project
The King Series (6-pack bundles) will allow me to work with students in small groups and each child will have his own book. Our literacy program provides only 2 of each title. They are simple stories on interesting topics that are perfect for their needs. Titles such as 'The reading contest', 'When I grow up', and 'Let's look forward', are stories about academic achievement and planning for success. They will inspire students to ensure a bright future by always doing their best. Multicultural alphabet books provide multiple resources: letter recognition/identification, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and multicultural concepts.
A functional computer in our classroom would allow my students to practice skills addressed in our Pre-K Technology Standards. They are expected to have dexterity with the mouse & be able to open & close a program. A new computer would provide access to the educational software our current model doesn't support, including games & a photo library.
Achieving success in any area requires desire, determination, hard work, and resources.
The King Series readers I've requested are stories about such character traits. The technological resource my students need is an HP TouchSmart All-In-One Computer to access the technology necessary for achievement of grade level standards. It will also provide a wealth of opportunities and resources for learning and practice in all curricular areas. The 'hard work' component is the seed I hope to cultivate.
