With school starting back up, I'm an elementary gifted teacher on the hunt for a class set (12 total) of Balance Beans, an award-winning game from ThinkFun that teaches young kids early algebra and physics concepts. One thing I know for certain--as a teacher and a mom of five--is that kids of every age crave learning that's fun, interactive, and hands-on. What better way to teach math fundamentals than with a pintsize seesaw and a collection of colorful, emoji-faced beans that teeter and tumble until you balance an equation? Stealth-mode learning disguised as games? I'm in, and my students will be too with your help.
Research shows that most students prefer "learning through doing." All students--especially at-risk students--respond well to playful, hands-on activities.
How will I use these Balance Beans games? Good question! For grades K-3, I'll pair up students to collaborate on the challenges during my classroom visits. For grades 4-5, I'll use the games for both individual and team challenges in my pull-out enrichment sessions. This is the number one game on my back-to-school wish list. Thanks for helping me deliver learning disguised as fun!
