Prairie Please, We Love to Read!

My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Many of them have experienced challenges we adults could not imagine. Our diverse classrooms bring many different cultures and languages. School is a safe and engaging place for all students with different backgrounds to come together to play, build relationships, experience, learn and grow safely. My readers come to school eager and ready to engage in their day. We work hard to meet the needs of each of these students both academically and socially.

My Project

South Dakota nominates books for their Prairie Bud (Kindergarten and 1st grade) Prairie Bloom (2nd and 3rd grade) and Prairie Pasque (4th and 5th) kids' choice awards. With my meager library budget, I am not able to purchase all of the books on the list. You can make up that difference!

Each year I read these books aloud to my students; then after reading the books they are able to vote on their favorite.

My students LOVE voting for their favorite and feeling included, like the other children in our state. Without your support, they would not be included in this state-wide kids' choice award.

Another thing my students love is the fact that they can then check out the book that has been read to them. If I borrow the book from another school or local library, I don't have that freedom of sharing the book over and over again through checkout. I cannot count how many times my littles come up to me and say "Can I have THAT one" pointing to the book we just read aloud. There is power in being able to reread a familiar tale, especially one they already connected to.

Thank you for providing this opportunity for my students. Without you, I'm not sure how it would be possible!
