My Students

I have the privilege of working with some of the most energetic, creative, and ambitious students in our school. They love music, technology, and opportunities to participate in engaging hands-on activities and projects.

Although the students are very talented and possess great potential, they struggle with social and emotional challenges.

These challenges are often barriers to academic and behavioral success in the classroom.

The goal is to create a classroom environment that not only facilitates their interests and academic growth, but that also fosters self-regulation, mindfulness, and other strategies that precipitate social and emotional growth and maturity.

My Project

Despite the many talents and potential of the students I work with, social and emotional struggles seem to increase the rate of acting out behaviors and decrease their displayed academic ability. As a result, the goal is to create a more supportive environment that allows them to use learned tools and strategies to increase self-regulation. Many of the items requested are mindfulness tools that will help with self-reflection, dealing with choices, and even increasing social skills. Other items, bean bags and radio, for example, allow for creating a comfortable place for students to regroup and calm down when needed.

Creating opportunities and providing space that support self-regulation, will eventually lead to generalization, and result in academic as well as social and emotional growth.
