Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a zoned middle school in Southwest Houston. Our population is constantly growing due to the increase of refugee students and English Language Learners (ELL). I admire the grit and determination they have to overcome any challenge that comes across them. They have a character that with new experiences and tools they can succeed on anything they propose.
My two 8th grade Mathematics classes are composed by mainly ELL students, many of whom are Newcomers.
Some of the home languages are Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Kirundi, Farsi, Urdu and Cantonese (Chinese). As a mathematics teacher my goal is to ensure that every member of our diverse student population has the opportunity to succeed academically and be empowered to lead within our community.
My Project
Our mostly English Language Learners class will gain a deeper understanding of math concepts through the integration of music and art into their math practice.
Students will have access to diverse digital content through their new tablets.
"Flocabulary is a web-based learning program for all grades and subjects that uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase achievement" Subscription will provide students an alternative way to make vocabulary fun to learn.
Skills and concepts related to transformations will be practiced as they manipulate giant magnetic pieces. Students creations will be documented using tablets' cameras to create art to be displayed around school. Great way to share with others how art and math go hand-in-hand.
