Practice, Practice, Practice!

Help me give my students an opportunity to practice and improve their bowling skills. We do not receive any funding for practice, bowling is an expensive sport! We need to practice weekly in order to be competitive.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners who are eager to participate in after-school tutoring programs and clubs.

Our school is one of the most diverse in the city.

Some of the languages spoken include English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Swahili, Farsi, and Arabic. Over 90 percent of the students are eligible for free/reduced lunch program. Our school welcomes refugees and new arrivals throughout the year. Sadly, many families are unable to provide school supplies for their children.

Research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students' sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out (Lamborn et al, 1992; Finn, 1993).

My Project

Our school has limited funds for athletics and after-school activities. In order to build a better bowling team, we must practice weekly, this can be very expensive. Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch and the additional cost to participate in a sport is an expense most parents cannot afford.

We are beginning the third year of the girl's program and continuous improvement by practice will enable our team to compete on the same level as other teams.

We will practice at Waveland Bowl, where the weekly games are scheduled. Participating in sports contributes to student-athletes growth as individuals and team members.
