This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 1st Grade Class is made up of 30 students. Half of those students are ENL (English as a New Language) students. The rest of the children are regular education students. My class is part of a program that is in its 4th year of running in our school. The idea is that ENL students will learn the language from language immersion, as well as a co-teaching setting for the reading/writing portion of the day.
Students are often teachers in each other's lives.
The ENL students are learning English and American customs from their new friends, and the native English speakers are learning about world cultures and tolerance from their non-native friends.
My Project
Due to the pandemic, most of my students will be coming back to school without having had a full year of Kindergarten. They will need to practice important skills, such as handwriting, letter formation, sentence practice, sight word recognition, and basic addition and subtraction. I plan to implement this extra practice with "morning folders". I have used this method for many years with much success.
Students get to practice, learn, grow, and have fun!
I have pre-made sheets that I put into protective sheets and keep everything tidy in three-ring poly folders. Each student gets his/her own folder, with work specifically designed for his/her own learning needs. The students work independently and at their own pace in the mornings using dry-erase markers on the protective sheets. It erases easily. The students love this task the most! It gives them a little bit of calm (after a likely crazy morning of getting to school on time) and they get to feel independent. They love using their "big kid" markers and having their own personal work.
