My Project

Practice Makes Fluent Readers!

What I love about my students is that they are MY students.

As their 4th-grade bilingual teacher, I can connect with them linguistically and culturally, creating an instant bond and allowing me to understand their vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension struggles. This year, my students are unique in so many ways. They have many challenges ahead of them. Most are reading between a 1st to 2nd-grade level, and only 10 out of 40 students are reading on grade level. 70% are of low socioeconomic status. They come from single-parent homes and homes where parents work two jobs to make ends meet. Because of this, someone may not be home waiting for them to make sure they read or do their homework—instead, they help with chores.

Despite this, they come to school eager to learn. Every morning I am greeted by their beautiful smiles. I can feel their excitement when they walk into my classroom. They know they need to work hard and are up for the challenge. My students love to read. Even more so when they understand what they are reading, but they need multiple opportunities to read leveled texts to become fluent readers. With such a diverse group, your sponsorship will help us tremendously. It would allow access to various levels of reading material. I can use these resources independently, in small and whole groups. It would make it fun for students to practice oral reading skills—boosting speed, accuracy, and word recognition. It would also build reading comprehension skills with leveled high-interest texts from various genres.
