My students need a bulletin board and lots of colored printing paper.

My Students
My students are incredible rising 5th graders with a passion for learning. Unfortunately, they have the odds stacked against them. They are growing up in poverty in an extremely violent neighborhood. 100% of the students at my school receive free or reduced priced lunch. Most of them are significantly below grade level. They are statistically some of the "lowest" performing students in the state of Florida. They have to deal with hardship after hardship inside and outside of school yet, they are some of the most resilient and passionate kids you will ever meet. These kids have a particularly special place in my heart because I've taught them before. I am determined to make our time together more meaningful than ever and I refuse to let our lack of access to resources hold us back.
My Project
I believe that when things are aesthetically pleasing, we get more excited about taking care of and using those items. The same thing applies to math journals. If it looks good, and is exciting, we are more likely to show them off and use them. I want my students to be proud of their journals, be able to successfully use their notes, and I want everything to be color coded in journals to better organize them. My students will use the colored paper daily. The paper will be for creating math journals, classwork sheets, and communication home with parents. The bulletin board is a necessity for us because I have very limited places to hang student work or anything else despite having several open cinder block walls.
