My students need a laptop computer (for their classroom) with DVD a burner.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. King's classroom raised $1,507
This project is fully funded
I am a 10th grade teacher in a high poverty, high need, inner city high school. Student-centered inquiry driven learning is the focus of my classroom. This is the style that I find to be most engaging, as well as beneficial for preparing college bound students. To be effective using this model of teaching with high school students, technology is a necessary medium for students to convey understanding of a topic, mastery of a skill, and evidence of research.
My classroom needs a laptop computer. At my school, we don’t have a media room or a place for students to present PowerPoint and/or multimedia projects. This is a huge disadvantage when preparing students for college because using technology in college is an integral part of the educational experience. Aside from this, students love technology. Using technology is visceral to today’s students because it has been around since their inception. It’s a part of most of their activities i.e. video games, cell phones, ipods and mp3 players, I should know, I have to fight with them on a daily basis to put these items away. So, if students have this love affair with technology, why fight them? As educators, shouldn't we embrace it and meet the students where they are? ABSOLUTELY!
With a laptop computer and DVD burner in my classroom, students will be able to do technology projects that they can present in the classroom. They can work on these projects in our school library computer lab or at any public computer lab and either burn the project to a CD or email it for classroom presentations. Again, computers and technology are the language that today's students speak. So by using tools that students enjoy, to enhance the learning experience, they will be more engaged. At the same time, students will be preparing for the college style presentations and multimedia group work that will be expected of them.
This may seem like a simple request; but, believe me, your help will make a huge difference in helping to prepare my students for college. Our school doesn't have the resources to have desk top computers or laptops in every classroom. However, my students' educations shouldn't have to suffer because they were born into low-income families. Your generosity will make it possible for my students to have a resource that is similar to their suburban and beverlyhills counterparts. With your help, I will be one step closer to ensuring that my students are ready take on college with the same resources as their peers.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
