My Students

Wade Pogany states, "It's about engaging students with technology and using technology as a tool to teach."

Our school is nestled in the poorest congressional district in the country.

My students live in an environment where the high school drop-out rate is well above 50%, yet they push themselves to come to school and be better.

Despite many challenges, my students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. However, given ever-increasing budget constraints, our school does not have the funds to reach the technological needs of our students.

I have nearly 100 students with a wide variety of needs and one of those needs is maintaining their attention during the lessons. Access to working computers to assist in the differentiation of instruction would be a wonderful addition to our classroom.

My Project

My school is in the early stages of what we call a reading revolution. We are attempting to create a culture of reading to build the reading levels of our students, to stir empathy and to expose them to more than what they know. The books that are purchased with the Barnes and Nobles gift card will become their independent reading book and may be the first book in their personal libraries.

My hope is that this experience opens their eyes to the magic of finding that "just right" book that speaks to their heart, that they will discover a love of reading, and that their academic levels across the board will increase.

The trip to the bookstore is part of our Books and Bowling Field Trip. We take the students to the Barnes and Noble where they get to browse the young adult section, talk to booksellers and pick their next independent reading book. The students will use the gift cards to purchase a book of their own while on the trip. This will empower the students and give them the feeling ownership of their book. The selection of their own books will help to encourage a culture of reading in the school.
