My students need access to music to help facilitate the learning experience in the classroom, and an iPod will open their ears and minds to a world of voices.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I remember a time as a boy when my father would blast classical music from his car stereo. I was so embarrassed, but with time and appreciation I grew to embrace many different voices. My students can understand Literature and History better if music is a part of that learning process.
I have a great group of students who are very sharp and eager to come to school and learn.
I feel very blessed to be able to teach a group of children who want to learn and look forward to a future of opportunity, and I believe in the education of the whole child. Most students do not get the opportunity to get out of the city and experience the beauty of other environments and cultures, but I truly believe that music and how it affects us all bridges a gap of differences and makes the world a little smaller and a whole lot more welcoming. The students in my class come from various racial and socioeconomic backgrounds and are deeply rooted in the military family structure. Some students come to class looking for stability and structure and the opportunity to shine and be special while others come to be challenged and to stretch their minds in new and unseen adventures of learning.
My Project
The iPod and music to be downloaded on it will be the exact tool I need in the classroom to help facilitate an environment of learning. Children respond to it in surprising ways. Last year, some of my students read Russell Freedman's book about Marian Anderson and they absolutely admired her perseverance and grit. When I played some of her songs for them, of course they giggled, but they got past it too and began to hear more in that voice. It was an added layer to the story, which words could not capture. It was listening to her sing that sealed the learning opportunity. It's powerfully emotional and capable of changing the way we see and think about the world. I want to bring a variety of music from all over the world as well as various audio books and speeches. It is one thing to read a speech of Dr. Martin Luther King's and a very different thing to hear him deliver the speech. My students will learn that to have a voice is something more than just... a thing.
Marcia Tate is a great proponent of music use in the classroom.
There is music for Language Arts, music for Math, music for Science, and definitely music for History, but there is also music to transition from one subject to the next. Music makes us happy, helps us speed up when we are dragging behind and to be more positive. Audio has the power to change the way we see things, it will empower my students to think more about the value of hearing when considering sensory language in writing.
