At Leadership Charter High School, a public school in San Francisco, we are committed to preparing every single one of our students to succeed in college. Leadership students are predominantly students of color from low-income households. Our math classes are student-driven, discovery-based, and grounded in group work and collaborative learning to develop strong problem-solvers. I teach Algebra, the first math class kids take at LHS as well as AP Calculus, the last.
As the Math Department Coach, I have observed that many of our students simply do not have the technology to compete with their wealthier counterparts. One of the most important tools for a math student to possess is a graphing calculator. Unfortunately, as a public school, we currently only have a limited amount of calculators to lend out during class time.
With a sufficient number of graphing calculators as provided in this grant, my Algebra students will develop fluency with using these tools. Graphing calculators not only simplify calculations, but they are a powerful way for students to find patterns, make conjectures, prove theories and see the connection between the equation, the graph and the data. Lower-level students benefit enormously from frequent use of graphing calculators.
For my AP Calculus students, of course, a graphing calculator is essential. On the nation-wide AP exam, which earns them college credit if they score well, students are expected to confidently use all of the many functions of the graphing calculator, including finding the area under the curve, calculating derivatives and solving complex equations. Students will solidify and extend their knowledge by having access to graphing calculators daily throughout the year.
With this grant, students will be able to use graphing calculators extensively in all of my classes. By helping my students acquire these incredibly useful tools, you will help to cultivate students who learn not by being told, but by exploring, finding patterns, creating conjectures and proving the concepts to themselves and their classmates.
