Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to Chicago from all over the world, often to escape unimaginable situations. I am always inspired by their dedication and determination to turn their adversities into their strengths. Often, my students are the first in their family to finish high school and go on to college.

The hard work, grit, talent and passion that they demonstrate give me hope that the future is bright.

I am dedicated to fostering their continued development into the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. To do this, my students and I need access to resources that are, sadly, not available to most urban public school students.

My Project

Anyone who lives in Chicago knows how diverse, and segregated, the city is. We live together in pockets of familiarity, and often our neighbors look just like us. This deep division, despite close proximity, creates tension that can bubble up and boil over into violence.

Too often, it seems that this violence comes from the police out of fear of the people they are charged with protecting.

In The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas explores the feelings of a teen who witnesses their friend get gunned down by an officer. This issue and these feelings are all too familiar for many students with the Chicago Public Schools. This book will be an excellent tool to support meaningful discussion of the violence in our city, the role of stereotypes and the idea of tolerance and acceptance of those that appear different than us. We need a classroom set of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas to help us critically explore the themes of violence, stereotypes and tolerance.
