Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are starving for stories. They need stories that capture their imaginations. My students devour every book I read to them. They fight over who gets to read the book after we read it. I often find them asking the librarian for sequels to the books we have read together in class.
My students come from all different ethnic backgrounds and cultures, but all of them have voracious appetites when it comes to reading.
Their favorite time of the week is library time. I constantly hear them say, "Teacher, will you help me find a good book?"
My Project
I have requested thirty-eight picture books that I will use during whole class Shared Reading. We will read these books together discussing the characters, plots and themes. These books cover a variety of genres such as folktales, poetry, mysteries, memoirs, legends, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, and fairy tales.
I have chosen these books because they are insightful, engaging and thought-provoking.
Most of all, these books have awe-inspiring characters that students can connect with. Students will relate to characters like Lucy in "Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun: Having the Courage To Be Who You Are" by Maria Desmondy, when she tries to decide if she should help the boy who has been bullying her. I know my students will cherish these powerful picture books.
