My Students
The fifth grade students at our school come from a variety of backgrounds. They are enthusiastic about learning and like many fifth graders, they are very social! They work hard and want to do their very best each day at school.
We are a Title I elementary school located in Richmond, Virginia.

My Project
I am requesting a class set of Flying Lessons & Other Stories for engaging stories to inspire my students to fall in love with reading! Flying Lessons is an anthology of short stories about children that have varied experiences. It gives a voice to people who do not see themselves in literature frequently enough. It also addresses situations and opportunities that don't get portrayed in literature enough, things like living out of a hotel room, watching a parent do something you didn't think was right, having feelings about someone new, family storytelling, playing pick up basketball at the municipal gym, being a person of color in an all white community, and playing basketball when you're confined to a wheelchair. Every student will be able to find a story to make a text to self connection.
These stories are a great way to engage my students in reading!
