This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bursting with energy and creativity and imagination as they constantly look for different ways to see the world. They know every good performance starts with good writing and reading.
They bring their own stories from all the NYC boroughs, from their families of multiple ancestries, from their experiences as people of color, and from the streets where they learned to dream.
They can see glimmers of their own selves or others they know in the lives of the characters they read.
My Project
While my students have been exposed to some of the more traditional classics, I want them to have a chance to read and perform from some of the more recent breakout dramatic literature. In my performance studies class I want students to be able to trace great dramatic writing across generations.
Though there is a clear understanding that theater presents a means to explore human truths, students lives can only be enriched by seeing a variety of ways to explore these truths.
This analysis and comparison they do with this literature will be the foundation of their end of semester essay. In addition they will have a greater depth of writing with more representative diversity in casting to choose from for their final performances.
