This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In 2024, I founded our Steel Pan + Latin Percussion Ensemble at MMA located in Boston, MA. We are the only bilingual public high school in the entire New England Area and serve a large majority of students of color from the Caribbean and Latin America. There are a total of 3 sections - our beginner, intermediate and advanced groups. We are in our second year and we've had an increase in interest and class sizes. My largest class has a total of 28 students!

As a Latina music educator, it is important that my students learn the history of the steel pan as well as how Latin percussion such as the güira, campana, claves, bongo and congas came to Americas.

The Latin percussion instruments along with our 15 piece steel pan ensemble only allows 20 students to participate at a given time so I have had to borrow 8 old and worn out practice pads and old drum sticks to make ends meet.

With your generosity, you would help provide new double sided practice pads along with new sticks to ensure that every student gets to participate in class and in our performances. Using practice pads instead of actual snare drums also helps us protect our ears!
