My Students
"It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
My student are choosing to read, but we need new choices of books to truly foster a love of reading. We don't have a literacy curriculum, and what better way to foster literacy than class novel studies with great books?
I have a very hard working group of students, however many students come to me as fifth graders and they still haven't found a true love of reading. Many of them have the desire, but the books that could really push their thinking to the fifth and sixth grade level aren't accessible to them simply because of the current set up of our school.
We are a very small school, with limited space, which means there are very few sets of fifth/sixth grade class novel sets. On that same note, we do not have a literacy curriculum, which means my students are rarely all exposed to the same reading material.
My Project
These books will be used to teach every single common core literature standard. These students will be reading, sharing, critically thinking, and pushing themselves as readers.
My students who aren't exposed to as much fifth and sixth grade vocabulary and literature will have these exact components at their very fingertips. By having our whole class with the same set of books, they will be given the exact support they need. On that same note, these books will challenge my true readers to share their thinking, teach others, and enrich their vocabulary. By participating in class novel studies, all my students will be exposed to the same literature, yet still allow them to challenge themselves as individual readers.
All students will learn to be in a community of readers that truly think about and just love reading. My students are rarely all exposed to the same piece of literature because of our current school set-up.
Being exposed to the same great literature is such a vital piece for us to create a whole community of lifelong readers, and these books are just the ticket for building that beautiful reading community.
