My Students

I have the privilege of teaching at 4 Title I schools in my district that have diverse populations of students from all over the world. There are students from 10 different countries at my schools. My students enjoy reading, project-based learning activities, robotics and being creative. I have the unique opportunity to teach Horizons, a gifted class at these schools. My students shine when I bring LEGO bricks or electronic kits into a lesson about animals, critical thinking, or problem-solving skills. With our students' economic backgrounds, they don't get many opportunities at home to interact with materials to encourage creative thinking.

My Project

My students really enjoy when I use LEGOs as a tool to teach certain concepts. My students have used LEGOs to create a summary of a story that we have read with different scenes as a visual sequence of events timeline in ELA. In math, we have used LEGOs to have a visual representation of a math problem which can be seen and moved around. For an activity in Social Studies, my students have created Lego scenes of different historical events. In Science, my students have used LEGOs to learn about the life cycle of different animals and the habitat where they live.

With the LEGO Technic Power Functions Motor Set my students can motorize their creations!

With these resources, the rigor of my instruction will increase. With these Power Functions Motor Sets my students can not only plan their LEGO scenes but not plan how they can make their creation move.

My first lesson with these resources will have my students build a Gingerbread Mantrap. In ELA, we have a unit with folk tales that this lesson would enhance. Students would use the engineering design process to plan, collaborate, build and improve their Gingerbread Man traps.

These motor sets will be a huge innovation that I can use with my Lego lessons. Thank you for making a difference in my students' lives!
