Power Up! Healthy Snacks = Healthy Brains

My students need healthy snack bags in order to have healthier choices during the school day as well as on the weekends.

My Students

Every day I greet students with a hug and a smile at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect of their lives. We engage in rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.

They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.

They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students"; it is always "our students".

My Project

Healthy snacks are so beneficial for children. Many times the two meals that are provided at our school are the only two meals students will consume each day.

Many of my scholars have taste buds that are used to sugar, processed foods , and "food like" products.

I want to offer healthier options throughout the day for students who need that extra boost to get them through the day. Eating healthier snacks will give their taste buds an opportunity to change as they get older. Cancer and other terminal illnesses have no age, race, or gender. Cancer cells love sugar and 99% of of the time my students are consuming white sugar, white flour, high fructose corn syrup, and soft drinks. These items are dangerous and effect the brain tremendously.

I would like to see disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, and Autism be reversed in the near future by our diets. On Fridays, my students will take home their reusable totes with 3-4 healthy snacks of their choice (nuts, granola bars, popcorn, fruit snacks, yum earth candy etc.) and return the bags on Monday.

Our future deserves healthier options. They deserve to be able to sit and learn with a prescription of healthy food being the main option.
