We have started a school year like none before. While we are face-to-face, there are still so many unanswered questions. For now, I must focus on the most important issues. My 6- and 7-year-old students need stability and support. They need to be assured that they are safe and will be well taken care of. They need to have the freedom to experience essential learning during this critical development period with minimal obstacles and distractions.
As we continue face-to-face, my students are blossoming with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning!
First grade students learn best with exploration and experiential learning. Using a tablet to develop basic research skills, we will be taking the first steps toward digital literacy. So many apps and websites are available for science research and other purposes for the primary classroom.
My Project
Every year, our first graders dive into an exciting animal research project in the spring. This project is the highlight of our year together! Our first step is teaching the students how to do online research, using a variety of different websites and apps. Since most of our school Chromebooks are being used by the older students in their hybrid school program, we don't have the usual technology available to begin this project. We have been extremely fortunate to obtain a class set of Android tablets through previous projects. In order to protect the tablets and keep them charged for daily use, we need charging stations and just three more protective cases.
