This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is a 3rd grade dual language (English-Mandarin) class of 23 students in District 1 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Most of my students come from low-income families and my school is a Title I school. Many of them receive free lunches based on their socioeconomic status.
Despite the many challenges they face, such as little food at home, my students are always so smiley, kind, thoughtful, and so generous.
They will save their snacks and surprise me by leaving snacks such as an apple, a banana, or a pack of cranberries on my desk! Their words, "You need brain food!" makes my heart melt! They are intelligent, fun loving, creative, and spontaneous.
I am looking to provide my students with hands-on, fun, and meaningful learning experiences. I need your help to make that possible.
My Project
I read about Power My Learning and thought that assigning my students the use of Family Playlists at the end of our instructional units to engage families is a great idea! Many of my families have access to mobile devices such as smart phones.
It will be so wonderful for my students to be able to engage their families using mobile-friendly, multilingual home playlists that put students in the role of the teacher at home, leading their families through dynamic home learning activities. My students love to share what they learn with families and friends!
This will be a perfect way to hold students accountable for their own learning as well.
In the process, students will also get to practice communicating with clarity (one of the habits of mind that we are working on). And of course, the best part is now exclusively via DonorsChoose.org, teachers can get Family Playlists and personalized PD for a fraction of the cost! I'm looking forward to trying this out.
