Power and Poetry

Help me give my students a powerful unit of inquiry around poetry that empowers them to find their voice and make it heard.

My Project

The language we use and hear every day is constantly persuading us of one thing or another, but how often do we recognize and analyze the use of persuasive techniques? This unit of study will inspire learners to do just this– to consider not just the power of the messages they hear and share but also the power of the words included in each of these messages.

This project will help students not only explore the power of language through a study of popular poetry and song, but also through a critical reading of a classic novel and the creation of their own poetry.

The graphic novels and Spanish editions of the George Orwell classic will help all learners access our novel study so that all students can engage in a conversation about persuasion and propaganda. The blackout poems book and chisel tip permanent markers will help us warm up our poetry skills in preparation for the summative project in which students will analyze a popular work and then compare and contrast it to a poetry work of their own.

This project will bring creativity and joy into our study of language and will create a lasting memory of the study of poetry for students.
