My students need clay in our ceramics class to continue developing their creative skills through the end of the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students enter the room and fill it with excitement and energy. They are happy to see each other and to get their projects off their shelves and get into their work routine. This donation will ensure that we have enough clay to get us through the year and keep the creative momentum going.
We are a very old school in a large urban district.
The budget does not allow for all the supplies needed. There is broken equipment and inadequate supplies which make it a challenge to teach and stimulate students. My students are mostly juniors and seniors who enjoy expressing themselves using clay. Many have found the artist within themselves they didn't know was there, basically due to lack of opportunity. It is truly a joy to see this happening before your eyes. Many students have developed skills in sculpting and decorate their work beautifully. Everyday I hear my words repeated as they teach and help each other with their work .I am grateful for these students who create a happy and creative work atmosphere.
My Project
The clay will be used to continue learning and developing skills. I have five ceramics classes with approximately 25-30 students in each class. We have pinched, coiled, and rolled slabs to create our ceramic pieces so far this year. Throughout the rest of the year we will continue to develop these skills with more challenging projects. These projects will include birdbaths, mosaics, and pieces combing hand building methods. We are going to start throwing on the potters wheel next. This is an exciting skill which students always look forward to learning. It takes practice and patience to learn, but once you can throw successfully it is fun, fast, and enables you to be very productive. My method is to teach the first group of 2-3 students while the rest of the class works on their assigned pieces. Then I have the first group help me teach another group. Everyone has the experience of making at least one piece on the wheel as well as exploring the many different forms which can be thrown.
Having this project will make a difference because it will get us through to the end of the year with clay.
There are no funds available from the school for more materials this year. I want to be able to finish my lessons and provide the students with the best art experience. In the past when we have run out of materials it has created a negative impact on students. They feel disappointed when I tell them we are out of clay and not getting any more. I want to keep the positive energy going.
