Pottery Wheels Grow Legs and High School Students' Confidence

Help me give my students "Speedball Artista Potter's Wheel Static Legs" for our pottery wheels so they learn to center clay the proper way, instead of atop wobbly tables, and tools that are age-appropriate for quality ceramic work.

My Project

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, students are often compelled to their phones and electronic devices, especially when they are bored or nervous. The healthier ways students can express themselves or improve their mental wellness are through creative processes. Students at the Village High School are offered the several opportunities to engage in the healing qualities of creation through various arts classes.

The most popular of these at our school has consistently been our Ceramics classes.

The most enjoyable process taught in our Ceramics classes is also the challenging: wheel-throwing. Our students in grades 9-12 learn to be present in the moment when they are learning to center and sculpt clay on the mesmerizing rotating wheel head. They gain valuable virtues of patience, perseverance, and self-reflection as they repeatedly deal with trials, errors, and triumphs. By concentrating on the process instead of the final product, students' practices improve their focus, confidence, and resilience.

While our art department is very grateful to own five Speedball Artista pottery wheels, "Speedball Artista Potter's Wheel Static Legs" are the missing component from our Pottery Wheels. Currently, our wheels are placed atop tables and students stand up, bent over the wheel, when attempting wheel-throwing. Aside from this not being the proper way to throw pottery, it is also a more painful posture to maintain for long periods of time than being seated at a pottery wheel with legs. It's also very difficult to center clay using the centrifugal force of the wheel upon a wobbly table. With two sets of legs, we could set up two of our pottery wheels permanently, and offer our ceramics students a healthier, more appropriate and achievable way to practice the motivating technique of wheel-throwing. Additionally, quality ceramic tools and supplies are integral to a comprehensive ceramics studio.
