My Students
My students attend an urban high school in Topeka, KS. The larger community often perceives our school as troubled and our students as disinterested in education. The truth is, these are teenagers just like any others, and they are hungry to learn and feel heard about the issues that matter to them.
Many of my students come to school tired and hungry and worn out from the difficulties and pressures they face at home.
There may not be time or space to play and indulge their creative sides. My library is a safe space to grow through self-directed learning and creative exploration.
My Project
Our students often only have the bare minimum they need for school, paper and writing tools, if that. When we ask them to create posters or projects to demonstrate learning, it's easier for them to do those assignments with appropriate tools. That's why I'm putting together a crate full of tools like stencils, rulers, and cutting tools, as well as consumables like colored pencils, poster pens, and paint.
When students have quality tools and supplies, they can create amazing work to demonstrate their learning.
These supplies will go a long way towards making sure they have everything the need to demonstrate what they are capable of.
