Help Ms. Schaefer

Post-it Notes! Seemingly routine for offices but perfect to help my students develop improved literacy skills! As a 9th grade Humanities teacher, a class that combines English & Social Studies, literacy is an essential focus of our curriculum. Our students are developing readers and struggle with comprehension, vocabulary, and fully understanding texts. Our school is in a high-need community in New York and serves both general and special education students, helping prepare all our students for college.

Our students need to become better readers and we lack the funds to purchase the supplies to help them interact with texts to improve their reading skills. We have already seen progress with some of our struggling readers through the use of post-it notes and graphic organizers. However, we need more supplies.

Therefore, we need a variety of post-it notes, post-it flags and highlighting tape to allow students to interact with books from our classroom library. In addition, we would like dry erase boards, erasers, and dry-erase markers to allow students to write and/or draw reading responses to the text while reading. Included in our proposal are two bins that will allow us to store these materials as well as a book of graphic organizers to copy for our students to assist them while reading. These tools will give our students the supplies necessary to focus on practicing their reading strategies (questioning, predicting, visualizing) and enable them to become better, stronger readers.

Your help will ensure that my students become fluent readers while helping them develop essential reading skills and giving them the opportunity to further enjoy reading. Without your help, our students will not benefit from the possibilities of post-it notes: progress and reading skills.
