I teach English to struggling readers and writers in an inner-city Chicago high school. One of the strategies my students struggle with most is questioning. This is an important strategy for all students to have when reading or thinking about their world. It helps them think critically about literature, which transfers to them thinking critically about their worlds. Questioning the status quo is the only way anything will change in our world, so I work diligently to help my students master this skill.
One way I help the students master questioning is by having them participate in "Post-it" discussions. During these discussions, they read a portion of a book individually and keep a stack of "Post-its" next to them. While reading they write down questions and interesting quotes and stick them in the book. Later, during discussion, the students use the "Post-its" to come up with discussion material.
Unfortunately, we have limited access to "Post-it" notes. Sometimes, we've gotten so desperate in class that we tear up pieces of scratch paper and place those in the books instead. The issue is that those don't "stick" and many students end up losing their questions.
I've seen dramatic results using this method, and all it takes are a few very simple resources: "Post-it" notes and pens! Thank you so much for considering our proposal.
