My Students
I have an amazing group of students who range from English learners to highly gifted. I have watched my students grow confident in their mathematical abilities this year. It was not uncommon for me to hear them remark, "I'm not good at Math." Now they are sharing strategies and exchanging ideas. This project will engage my students in a real world problem while stretching their mathematical skills and critical thinking. This problem based task will not only engage my students, but will create a life long memory from standards based learning.
My Project
Using a schematic, the students will calculate the surface area of the principal's golf cart. This addresses our common core geometry standards that address scale and surface area. The students will then calculate the area of one standard 3 x 3 inch post-it note. Based on their calculations, the students will estimate the number of post-it notes needed to completely cover the principal's golf-cart. Finally, with permission of course, the students will be allowed to test their hypothesis for how many post-it notes it will take to cover the principal's golf cart. This is why I am putting this project on Donor's Choose. The theoretical part of the task can be handled easily. The practical application will require a lot of post-it notes.
